"First Monday in October" originated as a stage play based on the premise that the president finally appointed a woman to the U.S. Supreme Court. Justice Dan Snow, a liberal dissenter sort of Justice who climbs mountains when on vacation, is ready for a woman on the court but is appalled to find out that the president appointed a tight-assed conservative, the Honorable Ruth Hagadorn Loomis who sits at a federal bench in Santa Ana, California, whom Snow characterizes as "the Mother Superior of Orange County."
This was an amazing parallel to real life, because in 1981 when this movie premiered, Reagan had just appointed the first woman to the Supreme Court, namely Sandra Day O'Connor, the Mother Superior of Maricopa County.
